Be Safe and Mighty

Be Safe and Mighty offers a gentle approach to engage the precious youth in your life to explore ways to be safe in the broader context of their environment – personal, home, school, and community. Composed of lively illustrations and easy-to-read text, Be Safe and Mighty is a vital life tool for young learners to understand how to make safe choices in various situations and encourage their peers to do the same. Parents, educators, and caregivers will value the use of this content as a social-emotional learning resource for home and school. Children will gain awareness and confidence, knowing that they are better prepared to proactively protect themselves from harm or danger.

In today’s eventful world, it is necessary to secure time and space for discussions with young children that serve to strengthen their protection from harm, and to help them develop new habits that fortify their physical and psychological functioning. Each explanation of safety in this book will enable restorative, critical conversations about the thoughts, feelings, and choices essential for preparing a child to put safety first.

The book also features a reader’s reflection and a list of conversation starters to aid communication regarding the information in this text with early school-age children, ages 5-8.

Born in Inglewood, CA, Almease grew up in a large, lively family, where it was often difficult to be heard or seen. Her childhood and young adulthood were blighted by more than a few traumatic experiences, including abuse, divorce, and cancer. With pillars of support from her husband, children, parents, a village of family and friends, and distinguished teachers, she survived it all. Since then, Almease has made a lifelong commitment to empowering others, especially children, to foster safe and healthy ways of living. Her calling to help meet the needs of children and families, revolutionize schools’ culture and climate and advocate for oppressed, distressed groups is more prominent than ever before.

Almease is a school social worker in South Los Angeles and has abetted to promote student empowerment and create safe schools for the past 13 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology, a master’s degree in social work, and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from the University of Southern California. Her ultimate desire is to create possibilities for children to internalize their strengths, raise their efficacy, develop nurturing relationships, and exclaim their right to safe and inclusive spaces.
